*In a sense this new Regular Army became two armies, one serving the Congress in the Reconstruction South, the other serving the Executive in the frontier West.


1869-  more 1000 officers boasted one or more brevets, & 138 of them claimed the brevet of major general

1869 & 1870- laws were passed to deflate the brevet system except for Presidential assignment (military courtesy continued the demand)

Not until the 1890's, after the Indian Wars, did reforms make military life (Pay, living conditions, recognition) more agreeable.

1878 Post schools for the education of soldiers became mandatory
